Montañita, Ecuador

“THE PAIN! THE HORROR!” along with indiscernible upchucking noises became the motto for me toward the end of Puerto Lopez and going into Montañita. We decided to move on from Puerto Lopez, despite my sickness, because there wasn’t much to do. Only to find out that when I’m bedridden, there isn’t much to do in Montañita either.

We decided to give Ecuadorian health care another shot and went to a different hospital since the idea of continuing to feel this crappy was not an option. Luckily for us, Ecuadorian health care is free, so we paid nada at both. Things at first were not promising, considering I was told to explain to the doctor what was wrong as I stood up, seeing as the only other chair was occupied by a tiny pregnant Ecuadorian woman (a common theme here since I am taller than most men and women, while Chris is a giant in comparison).

Things started to look up when she actually listened to what was wrong (unlike the last quack of a doctor) and ordered a blood test. The blood test concluded I do in fact have an infection. I was also given an injection for my nausea. I was told to basically ignore what the last doctor told me, and she gave me medication that I hope will get rid of my infection.

Our night was spent watching Despicable Me in our hostel room, while a barrage of Reggae music, bongo drums, and club music could all be heard outside. We did get to watch a small flame throwing show from our balcony. Montañita may be considered a huge party town, but Chris and I were just excitied to see that I ate a third of my “Chicken Diet” soup, which happened to be my first “meal” in three days. The music outside didn’t die down until around 4 in the morning, and that noise was only replaced by someone loudly knocking on our hostel door until what seemed like 6 am.

Our second, and only full day in Montañita, was spent in our hostel room seeing that I was still pretty worthless. I guess one good thing that came out of this is that it allowed us to catch up on the blog. As I typed this, I could still hear the constant Reggae music in addition to some lovely construction work. One thing is for sure, Montañita is the Ecuadorian little surf town that never sleeps. We are heading to Banos next (after 10 hours of buses that I’m sure my stomach will love).
